- Keep the inlet screen and pump free from debris or any type of blockage
The inlet screen and pump are among the most integral parts of the sump pump since this is where the floods water will enter and dispersed later on the discharge pipe. If there are any blockages on these areas then the water will be unable to move through the sump pump line and discharged. Basically, your sump pump is useless and your basement will be flooded anyway if you failed to remove the obstructions. Check on the inlet screen and the pump for blockage three or four times each year. An occasional check-up is also a good idea.
- Examine the float switch and make sure it’s still working
When the water level rises on the sump pump, the float switch is triggered to start the motor running. The sump pump will then proceed to pumping the water out of the basement. If the float switch isn’t working or jammed then the sump pump won’t even start in the first place. It’s imperative to inspect the float switch and ensure it’s functional. There are different types of float switch like the traditional and even electronic units. It really doesn’t matter what type you have since the float switch test is the same. Pour a bucket of water into the sump pump and then observe if the motor starts running or not. If you noticed that the sump pump doesn’t start even after pouring many buckets then there is clearly something wrong with the switch valve. The float switch may be jammed or just completely broken. Have it fixed as soon as possible.
- Discharge pipe should be free from obstructions
The discharge pipe is where the excess water will go out. Of course, if there are any obstructions then they won’t water can’t be dispersed. Just like the pump and inlet screen; you also have to check the discharge pipe for clogs like rocks, waste, and other debris that can lead to blockage. You need to be watchful especially during winter since discharge pipes tend to get frozen easily.
- Don’t forget to change batteries
Battery backups are very important for a sump pump. The backup allows the sump pump to still function in the event that there is no electricity to power the device. Don’t forget to replace the battery backup around every two to three years or as instructed in the manufacturer’s label.
